Simpson College has hired a full-time coach to guide the shooting sports club.

Scott Moniot will be the new coach for the club, having recently been the director of development for the Scholastic Clay Target Program. In his former position, Moniot worked nationwide with high schools and teams to help them fine-tune their skills.

The goal of the club is to encourage safe and responsible shooting practices, including safe handling, care and use of a gun. The club was started in 2010, and has always been supervised by a faculty adviser.

Moniot, who will start Aug. 1, hopes to help students become more interested in shooting and to give them opportunities to excel in their education.

"I want to make room in the club for everyone, from the casual shooter to those who are more serious about competition and let everyone have a positive experience," Moniot said.

The previous adviser for the club, Adam Brustkern, looks forward to Moniot's addition.

"By recruiting a core of students who are dedicated to the shooting sports, Coach Moniot will be able to increase the competitive nature of the club, while still fulfilling the club’s core mission of promoting safe and responsible participation in the shooting sports," Brustkern said.
