Saint Gregory School capped off a yearlong study on “Artists & Authors” by holding an arts experience on Mercyhurt University’s campus.

Nancy Pierce, the principal of St Gregory, said the teaching staff has dedicated a quarter to a different genre or author throughout the school year. This includes, nonfiction, poetry, Dr. Seuss, and silly and colorful literary works.

Activities held during the year included students working with the Erie Art Museum as part of the “Kids as Curators Program." This led to the school-wide production of the musical, Seussical Jr.; a student poetry performance; participation in the Mercyhurst University Institute for Arts and Culture visiting artists program; and encouraging students to write books.

The curriculum culminated on May 13 with a trip to Mercyhurst for themed activities based on “Artists & Authors.” The activities were coordinated by Jodi Staniunas Hopper, the art department chair.

Faculty and staff from the university helped put on the event. The programs included art, art therapy, dance, English, graphic design, interior design and architecture. Experiences ranged from dance movement to creation of poetry.
