The University of Maryland at College Park
and the University of Maryland at Baltimore recently announced their coordinated
plans for the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance, a key
component of the Cole Field House project.
"The Center for Sports Medicine,
Health and Human Performance at Cole Field House will deliver to the state's
citizens the power of partnership," University of Maryland at College
Park President Wallace Loh said. "Bringing together clinicians and
scientists from the state's two biggest public research universities under one
roof creates connections that will contribute to breakthroughs in human
health."
Through the center, the universities will
be able to study sports related conditions, including traumatic brain injuries
and their ongoing consequences for victims. The universities are set to receive
$3 million in funding through the MPowering the State Initiative, which will go
toward research projects involving scientists and engineers in College Park
and investigators and clinicians in Baltimore.
"We envision an ambitious research
enterprise at the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human
Performance," University of Maryland at Baltimore President Dr. Jay
Perman said. "We believe our initial $3 million investment will lead to
million-dollar, multidisciplinary grants in critical areas of neuroscience and
traumatic brain injury."
