Sticker shock: How in-state tuition compares at Midwest universities in 10 states

Residents in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan face the steepest cost of attending in-state universities, according to a Higher Education Tribune analysis of 115 schools in 10 Midwest states.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ranks no. 1 with the highest in-state price to attend, with $15,058 charged for tuition in 2016-17, according to U.S. Department of Education data. It’s followed by Miami (Ohio) University-Oxford ($14,736), Michigan Tech University ($14,634), University of Michigan-Ann Arbor ($14,402), and Northern Illinois University ($14,204).

The schools also estimate the cost of books per year, which can add as much as $2,400 (Northeastern Illinois University) to the cost of attending.

In addition to having the highest-ranked school, Illinois has the largest cluster of schools appearing highest on the list. Six of the 12 Illinois schools included in the analysis appear in the top 15. All 12 appear in the top 40.

Four of the 15 Michigan schools are in the top 15. All but one are in the top 50.

Four of 12 Minnesota schools are in the top 15. Five appear in the top 50.

One of Ohio’s 17 analyzed schools is among the top 15. Nine are within the top 50.

Three Indiana schools (Indiana University-Bloomington, Purdue University and Ball State University) and three Kentucky schools (University of Kentucky, University of Louisville and Western Kentucky University) were in the top 50. 

Only one of 13 Missouri schools (University of Missouri-Columbia) and two of the 14 Wisconsin schools included (UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee) are in the top 50.

The highest-ranked Iowa school, University of Iowa, is 62nd. The highest-ranked Nebraska school is 63rd.
