Missourians consistently have some of the least expensive tuition options in the Midwest, and that includes Missouri State University’s Springfield campus, which was rated the lowest among all the largest schools, according to a Higher Education Tribune analysis of in-state tuition at four-year universities in 10 Midwest states.
The Tribune compared 116 Midwest universities to their peers based on their enrollment, breaking down schools into those with more than 20,000 undergraduates, those with 10,000 to 20,000 undergraduates, and those with fewer than 10,000 undergraduates.
Missouri residents generally pay public-university tuitions that are well below the norm in the 10-state area. Missouri State University-Springfield students pay $7,060 in tuition, which is 53 percent below the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the most expensive large school. The latter university has an annual in-state tuition cost of $15,058.
Among mid-sized schools, Southeast Missouri State University was in the bottom three in tuition costs. The university charges students $6,990, which is 53 percent below the most expensive school in that category, Ohio’s Miami University-Oxford, which charges $14,736.
Missouri residents can also find economical choices among the state’s smaller universities. Missouri Southern State University, with a population of 6,231, charges $5,523, while Harris-Stowe State University has an in-state tuition cost of $5,220. Both of those campuses came in among the bottom five in tuition costs for universities with fewer than 10,000 students.
