Tuition rose faster than inflation from fall 2013 to fall 2016 at most schools included in a Higher Education Tribune analysis of in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in 10 Midwest states.
About 62 percent of the schools analyzed saw in-state tuition increase by more than 3.11 percent – the rate of inflation from 2013 to 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In-state tuition rose 23.6 percent at Kentucky State University, 19.8 percent at Northeastern Illinois University, 19.7 percent at Eastern Michigan University, 17.1 percent at Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ.-Ft. Wayne and 17.1 percent at Peru State College in Nebraska.
About a third of schools increased tuition at a rate slower than inflation. It increased 3.1 percent at Central State University in Ohio, 3 percent at Lincoln University in Missouri, 2.6 percent at UW-Green Bay, 2.5 percent at UMN-Duluth and 2.5 percent at UI-Springfield.
In-state tuition stayed flat at four schools – about 3 percent of those analyzed – including Ohio State University, University of Wisconsin-Platteville, Harris-Stowe State University in Missouri and Ohio State University- Marion. And it was reduced at University of Wisconsin Colleges (-0.5 percent) and Missouri Univ. of Science & Technology (-4.8 percent).

Between the fall of 2013 and the fall of 2016, the consumer price index rose 3.11 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
