ASHLAND UNIVERSITY: Ashland University Spring 2018 Commencement to be Held on Jones’ Terrace

Ashland University issued the following announcement on April 24.

Ashland University’s Spring 2018 Commencement will be held on May 5 at 10 a.m. on Jones’ Terrace, on the front lawn of Founders Hall. The speaker for the event will be Dr. Tracy Ringo, who is a doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and a member of the Ohio Army National Guard.

Ringo is a native Clevelander who graduated from Bedford High School where she was inducted into the Bedford High School Hall of Fame in 2003. She went to the University of Akron where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She then received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine; fulfilling a dream of becoming a doctor that she had since the age of 12.

She is dedicated to teaching and is a clinical assistant professor at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine where she trains third- and fourth-year medical students in her field. Ringo recently opened a new solo practice in Garfield Heights, Ohio, called Exclusively Skin, and her focus in this practice is on diseases of the skin.

Ringo is currently serving in the Ohio Army National Guard and was deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. She is the first African American female in the Ohio Army National Guard to reach the rank of Colonel and is currently the highest ranking African American female in the Guard in the state of Ohio. This year, she is celebrating her 30th year of service to her country.

The special commencement ceremony for the 140th anniversary of the University is being held on the front lawn of Founders Hall for the first time since 2010. The event will be for both undergraduate and graduate students and no tickets will be required for the outdoor ceremony.

In the event of rain, the ceremony for undergraduate students will be held in Kates Gymnasium inside the Physical Education Center, while the ceremony for graduate students will be held in Hugo Young Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Each undergraduate student and each graduate student will be given five tickets to allow his or her family to attend the indoor ceremonies.

Lineup for the undergraduate students and undergraduate faculty will be in the Conard Field House located just west of the Physical Education Center, while lineup for graduate students will be in the Recital Hall, Room 115, Center for the Arts and lineup for graduate faculty will be in Room 101/102 Center for the Arts.

Overflow seating will be available in the Student Center Eagles’ Nest and the Student Center Auditorium, where the ceremony will be broadcast live at each venue (see enclosed map for locations). The event also will be broadcast on the www.ashland.edu website.

The decision regarding the location of commencement will be made by 6:30 a.m. on the morning of Commencement and will be posted across the top of the homepage at www.ashland.edu.
