Cost of college went up for all students at Iowa State University

In-state tuition and fees rose 5.1 percent for 2017-18 at Iowa State University, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

Iowa residents paid $8,636 to attend the four-year public institution this year $417 more than the $8,219 charged for 2016-17.

Non-residents paid 160.2 percent more than residents this year, or $22,472. Their price tag grew 4.1 percent from $21,583 in 2016-17.

About 53 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Iowa residents. About 41 percent are residents of other states and 5 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 88 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 4,768 students received grants or scholarships totaling $35.4 million and 2,970 students took out student loans totaling more than $20.49 million.

Including all undergraduates, 20,544 students used grants or scholarships totaling $136.88 million. Another 15,002 took out $93.07 million in federal student loans.
