Charles Koch Foundation issued the following announcement on Aug. 2.

The Poynter Institute, a global leader in journalism, announced it will extend and expand its Poynter College Media Project. The program, supported by the Charles Koch Foundation, provides training to student journalists and encourages campus media to support and promote productive engagement with controversial topics.

Poynter Institute Senior Vice President Kelly McBride said, “Poynter believes in the power of free speech and civil discourse. And we believe journalism is a champion for both. The collegiate press is the perfect place to advocate for a vibrant marketplace of ideas, where all can be heard.”

The new grant will support work with the Associated Collegiate Press to identify nine additional student media organizations to participate in the initiative’s second year, tripling the program’s reach and impact from its first year. Poynter also will expand its reach by offering a series of webinars through its e-learning division, News University. The webinars will be available tuition-free to all student-run media outlets.
