Fort Lewis College issued the following announcement on Aug. 1.

The Fort Lewis College (FLC) School of Education officially received approval from the New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) to offer graduate courses and field experiences for the Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsement. In his approval letter, Christopher Ruszkowski, NMPED Secretary of Education, said that “[FLC’s] program demonstrates promise to add much needed support to school districts in New Mexico.”

The TESOL endorsement is part of FLC’s Master of Arts in Education: Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education program. The endorsement offers education and training to better serve English Language Learners in New Mexico. According to the U.S. Department of Education, 16 percent of New Mexico’s students are considered to have limited English proficiency, which ranks fourth in the country. Colorado is next on the list with 12 percent limited English proficient students.

Students earning their master’s degree at Fort Lewis College can either earn the TESOL or Colorado’s Culturally and Linguistically Diverse endorsement. FLC is the only Colorado school and one of only four New Mexico institutions to offer the TESOL.

“The graduate program in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education builds on a strong tradition of offering culturally diverse educational programs at Fort Lewis College, which was the first teacher education program in Colorado to offer Bilingual Navajo and Spanish Teaching endorsements in the 1970’s under Dr. Linda Simmons and Farrin Webb,” explains Dr. Richard Fulton, dean of the FLC School of Education.

“Congratulations, in particular, to Dr. Lorien Schuldt, Dr. Jennifer Trujillo, Dr. Chiara Cannella, and Dr. Kris Greer for working closely with the New Mexico Public Education Department to secure this authorization.”
