HOWARD UNIVERSITY: HUH Announces Dr. Kevin Dawson As New Chief Information Officer

Howard University issued the following announcement on July 31.

Howard University Hospital announced today that Dr. Kevin Dawson has been named chief information officer. In his new position, Dr. Dawson will be responsible for the planning, development and implementation of HUH’s management and clinical information systems and services. He will also oversee the hospital’s strategic information technology initiatives, designed to improve patient care quality outcomes, governance, management and performance among physician practices, individual and hospital patient care.

Prior to the appointment, Dr. Dawson served as vice president, chief technology officer of MDx BioAnalytical Laboratory in College Station, Texas. He succeeds Becky Quammen, MBA, DBA, who has effectively led the IT function at HUH as an independent contractor for the past two years.

“The role of CIO is critically important as it ensures that HUH has reliable IT systems that support our goal to deliver excellent services to our patients. Kevin brings an outstanding combination of strategic vision, technical depth and comprehensive executive-level experience in both healthcare and business,” says James A. Diegel, FACHE, HUH chief executive officer. “He is a process-oriented leader and developer of talent, which are necessary skills, given the scope and evolving nature of healthcare IT. As an HUH-employed CIO, I am confident that he will plot a clear path on how technology can improve the efficiency of the hospital’s overall operations while balancing our current information system’s needs.

Dr. Dawson comes to HUH with a vast amount of technology leadership experience. He served as vice president for information services of LA BioMed at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center from 2014 - 2017. During his tenure, he introduced industry best practices, established IT collaboration with UCLA and Los Angeles County and aligned the IT department’s strategy with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

From 2011 - 2013, Dr. Dawson served as the director of IT, business intelligence for Cancer Treatment Centers of America. He was responsible for building a business intelligence department that won Computerworld Magazine’s “Best of BI” Editor’s Choice Award. Dr. Dawson also served as the director of informatics for City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, Calif., in 2010 - 2011, and as the director of informatics at the University of California, Davis from 2003 - 2010.

Dr. Dawson is a certified healthcare CIO. He earned a doctor of medicine degree from the Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary, a master’s of science degree in medical informatics from the University of California in Davis, and a master’s of business administration in technology management degree from the University of Phoenix.

Dr. Dawson is an active member of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society, Healthcare Data Warehousing Association and the American Medical Informatics Association.
