Blinn College issued the following announcement on Sept. 26.

The Blinn College District has recognized three instructors for their commitment to student success, and for the passion and skill they bring to the classroom.

Karen KillionBlinn named Biology Professor Karen Killion, Mathematics Professor Patrice Poage, and Dental Hygiene Instructor Dana Wood its 2018 Teaching Excellence Award winners.

Representing the Brenham, Schulenburg, and Sealy campuses, Killion has been a member of the Blinn faculty since 2006. She holds an Associate of Science degree from North Central Texas College and Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in biology from Midwestern State University.

“Science is all around us, inside us, and it affects every aspect of our lives,” Killion said. “I attempt to make it real for my students by creating connections between the textbook and life by way of my own personal experiences. The more I can relate science to my students’ lives, the better informed they will be when making decisions that affect their lives and the lives of others.”

Killion is a member of various organizations, including the National Association of Biology Teachers, American Chemical Society, Texas Community College Teachers Association, Blinn Alumni and Friends Association, and the Buccaneer Backer Club.

Patrice PoagePoage served as a Mathematics Professor in Blinn’s Mathematics, Business, Engineering, and Technology Division from 2002-03 and 2011-2018. She holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from Tarleton State University, a Master of Science in mathematics, and a Doctor of Philosophy in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University.

"I have a passion for mathematics and for teaching,” Poage said. “I stress to my students that it is not just about passing a math class. It is about equipping yourself with problem-solving abilities and ways to think logically in all areas of your life. It is my hope that my students leave the classroom not only more knowledgeable in the subject matter, but also inspired to continue learning.”

Prior to joining Blinn, Poage served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, Mathematics Education Instructor, and Mathematics Lecturer at Texas A&M University for 11 years.

Dana WoodWood came to Blinn as a Dental Hygiene Instructor in 1997 after 14 years of clinical experience. Wood earned her Associate of Applied Science in dental hygiene from Bee County College and her Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary technology from Texas A&M University. She is a member of the Texas Dental Hygiene Association, the American Dental Hygiene Association, and the Texas Dental Hygiene Educators Association, and is a national delegate for the American Dental Association’s Give Kids a Smile Program.

Wood, who earned the Teaching Excellence Award on behalf of Blinn’s Division of Technical and Community Education, is state and nationally certified as a dental hygienist.

“The main reason I teach is to pass on to future registered dental hygienists a passion for a career that allows them to serve,” Wood said. “I strive to emulate a model of integrity in care, a passion for service, and provide clinical care at the highest level, so our students may desire to carry it out into the profession once they leave Blinn.”
