Adelphi University  recently issued the following announcement.

Andy Atzert has been selected to serve as the new dean of the Adelphi University College of Professional and Continuing Studies, effective July 8. Atzert was previously the senior associate dean for external affairs and associate dean of administrative affairs at the Columbia University School of Professional Studies.

“I am pleased to welcome Andy Atzert to his new role as dean,” said Adelphi Provost and Executive Vice President Steve Everett. “Andy has a wealth of impressive experience in the development of innovative online and in-person educational offerings for nontraditional students and lifelong learners.”

At Columbia, Atzert collaborated with faculty and school leadership to expand programming and operations in New York City and San Francisco, which led to the addition of more than 90 faculty and staff positions. He also built a new team of professionals focused on alumni affairs and development and led them in the launch of a $10 million campaign to support a proposed new center that will serve underrepresented populations by providing access to education required in emerging career fields.

Prior to his role at Columbia, Atzert served as vice president for distributed and global education at The New School in New York City. Under his leadership, The New School launched an online certificate program that enrolled more than 4,000 students in its first year. He established The New School’s Paris-based Global Executive Master of Science Degree in Strategic Design and Management and led the initiative to build a New School campus in the People’s Republic of China.

Previously, Atzert served as chief operating officer of the Wharton School’s Aresty Institute for Executive Education at the University of Pennsylvania and as assistant dean of the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.

“I feel excited and privileged to be joining Adelphi University,” said Atzert. “I look forward to working across the institution to advance the University’s long-standing commitment to nontraditional learners, who now represent the largest population of students in higher education.”

Atzert holds a Master of Science in Education in Applied Linguistics/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in English and American Literature from Rutgers University. He is working on earning a doctorate in education in organizational leadership studies from Northeastern University, with a proposed dissertation titled “An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis of Cultural Intelligence on Global Virtual Teams.”

“I look forward to seeing our programming for lifelong learning continue to flourish and grow under his direction,” said Provost Everett.
